The things “they” say

You burden me with your questions
You’d have me tell no lies
You’re always asking what it’s all about
But don’t listen to my replies

The things, you say
Your purple prose just give you away
The things, you say
You’re Unbelievable

Those in the know, those in power, those who are all Kool and the Gang often have plenty to say. It is the group “wisdom” which they tend to proffer. They can be evangelical about group “wisdom” or customs. There is only one “right” way and that is “our” way.

If one is prone to upsetting the applecart or rocking the boat, those who are keen about career progression might say:

“He is not doing himself any favours”.

If you fail to kow-tow or brown nose enough

“He is not doing himself any favours”.

If you do not comply as and when you are supposed to and with all the edicts of the self diagnosed “great and good”, the Gods of Olympus.

“He is not doing himself any favours”.

It is a way on commenting on the requirement for social acceptance and compliance according to some train-track view of how things are supposed to be, how they ought to be and how they should be.

If I joke about my own insanity I am encouraging people to doubt it and to take me less seriously.

“He is not doing himself any favours”.

I lack gravitas by taking the piss, swearing and not being sanctimonious serious.

People have a lot of preconceived ideas and prejudices. “They” say an awful lot. “They” have many adamant opinions about which they are vociferous.

They tend to criticize errancy from some notion or norm within peer group or clique. “They” are the clique police, the gang enforcers.

“They” cannot understand if you do not want to be a member of their gang. Even if you don’t want to be a member they might say.

“He is not doing himself any favours”.

They may not understand that power by association can be a double edged sword. Whilst on the one hand association with the Trump administration {I use this term tongue in cheek given the level of chaos} is seen as a good thing, increasingly it is seen as less attractive.

One could say that Trump is not doing himself any favours by bombing Iran…

People love to gossip…

That Huw Edwards is not doing himself any favours when he buys photos….

“They” are generally extroverted and accustomed to soap box speaking…

The thing is many worry a lot about what “they” say or might say…

I am probably not doing myself any favours by making this comment…
