Tower – Blue Throne – Biskelion – Ratatouille Dream – 30-03-2026

Here is this morning’s dream. It is a kind of dream which I have not had for a while.

I am in an open topped sports car with Chris a dreaming Scholar. I am driving. It is right hand drive. The car is almost classic American in scale and is large. We are driving around a light coloured stone town / village on a windy hilly road, in a warm Southern Mediterranean setting on an Island. Think Crete Sicily or Malta. We wind up hill and into a ruins complex where once there were fortifications, a castle even. We come upon an isolated erect stone tower in the ruins it is cylindrical and tens of metres tall. It is 10-15 metres in diameter. There is an open arch come doorway at the foot of the tower. We park up and Chris and I go to look inside the tower.

Suspended above our heads in free space is a large blue chair come throne. It is large enough for two normal backsides. It has pins holding the blue fabric upholstery in place all along the edges of the seat. It has curved carved feet “Louis XIV” and some similar detail on the back. It is a thing of cost and of beauty. It is just sat there suspended in a soft down coming light. It is some kind of throne in a tower which we are looking at.

Our perspective rotates and we can wee the throne from all angles below and at the same height as the throne.

The scene changes and I can see in full visual field what can be described as a two pronged triskelion. It has two “propeller blades” each with a dog leg. It is a biskelion. The shaft of the “blade” is black the dog leg metallic silver grey. It has to it an inherent sense of rotation, clockwise.

The scene changes and I am alfresco at a stove come worktop under a rough twig roof on a patio of sort. Below downhill I can see the sea. On my tiled workplace I have a chef’s “mis en place” of chopped onions, courgettes, yellow peppers and garlic. There are plump lush dark red Mediterranean plum tomatoes. I slice these into large “paysan” lumps. I have a wide brimmed, well used by its colour, frying pan on the stove. I add a splash of virgin olive oil and allow it to heat and swirl. I can see a small terracotta dish with pine nuts in and another with capers. I am going to be making a tomato rich ratatouille like dish with a pesto twist. There are also some shelled green pistachio nuts.

The dream ends.

Severe Drought of Love-Wisdom

Given the climate and bloodshed in the Middle East (and Ukraine) I think it fair to say that there is little love-wisdom manifesting there. Instead we have bloody vengeance and paranoia out of Israel supported by a coercive display of military power from Washington. There is no Christian turning of the other cheek. There is a fully intentional bellicose and vicious destruction of human life and property.

Where is the love?

Where is the wisdom?

It is just the same old blood for blood endless cycle of brutal (and petty) nastiness.

When did murder ever bring long term peace? It cannot because it is karmically bad.

I wonder when Blaise Metreweli spoke with Keir Starmer yesterday afternoon to give an intelligence update, what options did she offer him? How does one minimise damage and risk in a geo-political climate like this? How do you mitigate Trump and Benjamin Nosferatu?

If we are lucky enough to get granted a right to stay in France we might be able to move to any of the following : Guadeloupe, Réunion, Mayotte, Corse, Martinique, Guyane or Polynésie Française.

It also seems that Strasbourg might be possible to be energetically near the European parliament.

In the blue books opus the Tibetan talks about the return of the Christ. A being on the second ray of love-wisdom. A being linked to all the second ray ashram(s).

There is some end of days – Armageddon – final conflict thinking behind the current motivation to destruction. I suspect that this is down to a misunderstanding of religious prophecy. It is a twist used to justify.

Maybe it is necessary to create a brutal void, a desolate desert in which not a single seedling of love-wisdom might sprout in order to precipitate such a drought, such a huge vacuum of love-wisdom. Maybe then, because nature abhors a vacuum, will the severe need call forth the return of the Christ.

The ways of the ashrams have only been briefly touched upon in the blue books opus.

I suspect that the level of understanding held by many is not high.

The geo-political impacts of a Jesus or a Siddhartha extends way beyond the petty ambitions of any man. The imagined legacy of presidents and prime ministers pales against millennia long profound change evoked by extraordinary beings.

If they are really wanting the end of days messiah then they might be a little more careful what they wish for. It will not be to appease their vanity which he might come. There will be change and the structures which they seek to preserve are amongst the things which need changing.

Sometimes things happen when people are trying to prevent them. The universe does not kneel to the whims of man.

Cagliostro – Erasing Personal History

In a world obsessed with the curriculum vitae it makes “sense” to be able to account for our life, our training and our affiliations. We might even get a job on the basis of our CV. Historians may want to pin down where we were born, to whom and with whom we associated. That makes a story, a narrative of our lives, a his-story or a her-story. Human folly suggests that these stories are important when they are in fact impermanent and mutable. If someone knows our story we can be held to it.

“You said you are vegan and that meat is murder. How come you are eating a steak you lying bastard?”

Our stories make an expectation which people expect us to life up or down to. If we don’t behave as a good priest we could be chucked out of church for shagging a prostitute.

There is a Toltec technique called “Erasing Personal History”. In which one is encouraged to unpick, change and ultimately remove any legend or story we might have about ourselves. We become free of the bullshit we tell ourselves about who and what we are. We are liberated by rubbing out the story, erasing it. As an interim measure we might make a working story to use until such time as we have no story at all.

The CIA and MI6 allegedly prepare extensive cover stories for agents complete with passports and driver licences. The back story might be fleshed out in, inter alia, social media.

So why not invent a cover as Comte de Cagliostro?

It might infuriate those who want to try to pin you down to some identity or other. You are not playing fair if you do not stick to “normal” societal rules. Who is this charlatan?

Well maybe he was someone who was erasing his personal history forever reinventing how he behaved and how he presented himself. As he evolved as a spiritual being his story, his legend evolved with him. He was not a fixed and rigid being. He was not constrained by the stories others sought to tell and be adamant about.

Right now there is nobody who can give a good account of me. I have claimed that I used to teach chemistry to the nurses. Nobody has tested my knowledge. I could be a lying charlatan. Weirdly I might be able to talk about high resolution laser spectroscopy and how to use a two-stroke strimmer.

If your bloodline was dangerous to you. It might be wise to hide your pedigree. Having noble parents could mean your end. There are many motivations why someone might be vague about their birth.

They did not have DNA screening and biometrics back then!!

It is funny to watch people getting into a tizzy about who Comte de Cagliostro might have been. Then watch them present their theories, which have made it onto Wikipedia.

So obvs they must be gospel true.

The whole notion of wanting and trying to erase any and all personal history goes against what makes “sense” in the normal socio-political view of the world. A personal history can shackle.

Peoples lives are ruined now because once they made an ill conceived remark. Their careers can be trashed, cancelled, because of the recorded history of what they are alleged to have said.

Now like so many others I am writing off any trip to the USA because what I have written on blogs may be held against me and prohibit my entrance. There is no point doing the paperwork.

Having your history held against you is not very liberating…

I have not been to Malta for quite a number of years 😉

The Triangular Book of St. Germain

The Triangular Book of St. Germain or The Triangular Manuscript is an untitled 18th-century French text written in code, and attributed to the famous Count of St. Germain. It takes its name from its physical shape: the binding and sheets of vellum that comprise the manuscript are in the shape of an equilateral triangle. The text, once deciphered, details a magical operation through which a person can perform feats of magic, notably the discovery of treasure and extension of life.

History

The two known copies of the Triangular Manuscript exist as Hogart Manuscript 209 and 210 (MS 209 and MS 210). Both currently reside in the Getty Research Institute’s collections, each with its own history.

MS 209, dated 1775, was made for Antoine Louis Moret, a French freemason who immigrated to the United States in 18th century. At one point it resided in the library of Jules C. G. Favre (1809-1880), a French politician. Pliny E. Chase (1820-1886), an American mathematician with an interest in cryptography, makes mention of it in a lecture to the American Philosophical Society on October 3, 1873, stating that the manuscript was “purchased in Amsterdam, about seventy years ago,” i.e. around 1803. It is unclear if he owned the manuscript, examined it, or had simply heard of its existence. French bibliographer, poet, and Rosicrucian Stanislaus de Guaita (1860-1898) had it in his library for some time. From there it passed on to a certain Madame Barbe of Paris, and then to Frank Hollings, a 20th century London writer and antiquary. After 1934, Hollings sold it to Manly P. Hall.

Much less is known about the other manuscript, MS 210. Dated 1750, older of the two copies, it was once in the library of Lionel Hauser, a member of the Theosophical Society in Paris. In 1934, Manly P. Hall purchased it for 40 guineas at an auction of Hauser’s library at Sotheby’s.

The Count of St. Germain (French: Comte de Saint Germain; 1691 or 1712 – 27 February 1784) whose real name and origins remain unknown, was a European adventurer who had interests and achievements in science, alchemy, philosophy, and the arts. He rose to prominence in the European high society of the mid-18th century due to his works and interests. He associated himself with some of the top contemporary figures, including Casanova, Voltaire and Mozart.

The count used a variety of names and titles, including the Marquess of Montferrat (Fr. Marquis de Montferrat), Count Bellamarre (Fr. Comte Bellamarre), Knight Schoening (Fr. Chevalier Schoening), Count Weldon, Count Soltikoff (Fr. Comte Soltikoff), Manuel Doria, Graf Tzarogy, and Prince Ragoczy (De. Prinz Ragoczy). He appears to have begun to be known under the title of the Count of St Germain during the early 1740s.

He is said to have made far-fetched claims (such as being 500 years old), leading Voltaire to dub him “the Wonderman”, and that “he is a man who does not die, and who knows everything”. Prince Charles of Hesse-Kassel, called him “one of the greatest philosophers who ever lived”.

—————

In 1892, Helena Blavatsky characterized the Count of St. Germain as “the greatest Oriental Adept Europe has seen during the last centuries.” She said that he was one of her Masters of Wisdom and hinted that he had given her secret documents. The Theosophical Society after Blavatsky’s death considered him to be a Mahatma, Master of the Ancient Wisdom, or Adept.

According to the Theosophical Society, the Seven Rays are seven metaphysical principles that govern both individual souls and the unfolding of each 2,158-year-long Astrological Age. Since, according to Theosophy, the upcoming Age of Aquarius will be governed by the Seventh (Violet) Ray (the Ray of Ceremonial Order), Saint Germain is sometimes called “The Hierarch of the Age of Aquarius”.

Annie Besant said that she met the Count in 1896.   C. W. Leadbeater claimed to have met him in Rome. According to Leadbeater, the count had brown eyes, olive colored skin, and a pointed beard, adding “the splendour of his Presence impels men to make obeisance”. Elsewhere, he described the count as wearing “a suit of golden chain-mail which once belonged to a Roman Emperor; over it is thrown a magnificent cloak of crimson, with on its clasp a seven-pointed star in diamond and amethyst, and sometimes he wears a glorious robe of violet.”

Shamballa and Guardians of the Race

Shambhala (Sanskrit: शम्भल, IAST: Śambhala), also spelled Shambala or Shamballa (Tibetan: བདེ་འབྱུང, Wylie: Bde’byung; Chinese: 香巴拉; pinyin: Xiāngbālā), is a spiritual kingdom in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Shambhala is mentioned in the Kalachakra Tantra. The Bon scriptures speak of a closely related land called Tagzig Olmo Lung Ring.

The Sanskrit name is taken from the name of a city near the Ganges, sometimes identified with Sambhal in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, as mentioned in the Hindu Puranas. The mythological relevance of the place originates with a prophecy in Vishnu Purana (4.24) according to which Shambhala will be the birthplace of Kalki, the next incarnation of Vishnu, who will usher in a new age (Satya Yuga); and the prophesied ruling Kingdom of Maitreya, the future Buddha.

Excerpted from Wikipedia

In the blue books opus Kuhl makes numerous mentions of Shamballa and it is referred to in the Kalachakra Tantra. The obvious Lara Croft or Indiana Jones question is where? Where can I find this mysterious place which is perhaps imbued with secrets, power and treasure?

Kuhl suggests that initiates of a certain degree { 3 and above} can go “there” as members of the blue or white lodges. Here the term lodge has perhaps been adopted for the benefit of those inculcated into freemasonry. A lodge is hardly a Himalayan notion. He suggests that Shamballa acts as a kind of planetary chakra. It is “at” Shamballa that certain members of the so-called hierarchy meet and meditate. This so-called hierarchy correlates with those Théun Mares refers to as “The Guardians of the Race”. The notion is that these beings have since the beginning of humanity been looking over us and revealing various teachings to help humanity evolve. They distribute “energies” which are both causal and facilitative.

In this school of thought beings who have taken the fourth initiation no longer have a causal body which is blown off during the act of initiation. These beings are no longer required to incarnate by the laws of material karma. If you accept such a notion, if only as a working hypothesis, it should be reasonably clear that a being who no longer needs to incarnate will be markedly different to one who must. Technically they no longer have a reincarnating Jiva or Soul. They have transcended. They are now something else.

If you are not even partially soul infused it might be difficult to comprehend someone/something who has gone way past where you might find yourself now. It might be tempting to suggest that this is a bunch of codswallop and made up fairy tales.

To look for a physical plane manifestation of Shamballa would be a sign that one only believes in physically measurable physical materiality. The absence of stones or ruins mighty be deemed proof of the non-existence. History suggests that many things “proven” by humanity are subsequently found incomplete, inaccurate and wrong. Yet humanity remains adamant and vocal about the completeness of current “proof”. The soap box beckons. There is an in public alignment with the currently accepted dogma.

Shamballa is probably not a Disneyland style magic castle in the air…

As it is described it is an operative “sacred” thought form, a place of work and/or meditation. It is “there” that a gathering of consciousness occurs. Over a long while this thought form has been built refined and shared. One cannot construct it, imagine it, unless one is already able.

The thought form is more complex and extensive than one might imagine. Certain “areas” are available only to relatively few. One might say that physical limitations like brain and noisy mind can limit access.

The way Kuhl describes it is by analogy perhaps to some kind of temple in which there is an inner sanctuary open only to those evolved enough to enter. There can be found, depending upon the needs of the time, the three Buddhas of activity, the senior members of the hierarchy and the Sanat Kumara.

To expect a corporeal from, human shaped, points at the endless anthropomorphic ideation of humans. The one which casts God as a geezer on a cloud. Human imagination has a bit of a meat, bricks and mortar, fetish.

Not all members of the externalising hierarchy are linked or tied to Shamballa, according to Kuhl. One might take the published writings as merely a taster of a much wider plan. It is by way of, perhaps, a “for instance”.

He suggests that those working with the Shamballa impulse are developed meditatively in a particular way, trained to work therein and therewith. They may well be in a physical incarnation; there are others which are not.

The notion of a disincarnate being working on “energies” pertaining to the planet, is not currently provable, nor might it be swallowed easily by the modern omniscient scientist. These putative contemplatives are formless to mundane eye. The notion of a formless intellect or consciousness is an anathema to a neuroscientist who must publish and put dinner on the table. MRI machines cost shit loads and these must be justified. They could not measure a formless contemplative.

To accept that things which cannot be measured using the instrumentation based on The Standard Model exist, is not easy to accept. Yet dark matter and dark energy are mooted.

The more that minds construct the Shamballa thought form the more “concrete” and “real” it becomes.

If a lot of people think of “Gangnam Style” then one can be easily infected by a brain worm, which is difficult to shift. Thought forms have a non-material existence in the “aether” for want of a better word. We can easily tap into them whether we might wish to or not.

Shamballa then is by way of a meditative and intuitive “thought form” which has a non-material existence and “where” meditation and work can be carried out in a group like manner, in formation and en rapport

In Connection with the Council Chamber of Sanat Kumara, the Lord of the World

As this subject concerns one of the seven goals towards which the Masters aim after They have attained the fifth initiation, it will be obvious to you that there is little that I can say about it. One of the seven Paths for which the Way of the Higher Evolution prepares the senior initiates is the Path of Earth Service. This Path, as you know, keeps the Masters attached to service in the three worlds for a period much longer than the average. It involves tremendous sacrifice. Just as the disciple has to live a dual life, with one part of his reflective nature and awareness centred in the life of the Hierarchy and the other part of his mental responsiveness equally centred on life in the three worlds, and this simultaneously, so the Master, when He chooses this Path, forms a constituent part of the Council Chamber of the Lord of the World and at the same time works consciously in the three worlds, via the Hierarchy (of which He remains also a part), and with the human and subhuman kingdoms in nature. As evolution proceeds, He will work increasingly via humanity because humanity will be shouldering its responsibilities as the Macrocosm of the lesser microcosm. This dual activity entails much specialised training, and as the initiatory process becomes exoteric and men everywhere recognise it and participate in it, the training which Members of the Hierarchy also undergo will not be so secret and mysterious as it is today. But the time has not yet come to publicise it.

Only certain further generalisations are here possible, some of which are already known to you because they are so broad that their inclusions and implications are obvious. This, for instance, concerns the “centre where the Will of God is known”. Here at Shamballa work Those Who have unified Their personality will and Their spiritual will with the universal will, and such a unification inevitably brings knowledge. It is, however, not knowledge as you understand it. It is a blend of wisdom based on knowledge, understanding based on intuitive perception, and identification based on alignment, esoterically comprehended. For this peculiar condition or awareness we have no word in any language, and only the utilisation (the trained utilisation) of the abstract mind can possibly convey to you even an embryonic factual conception. But that type of imaginative conception will become more common during the next two centuries, and my words here will therefore serve an ultimate purpose. Those Who form the Council Chamber of the Great Lord are under no misapprehension as to His will because They see it whole. Paul, the initiate, hints at this when writing one of the Epistles; he is in touch then with certain Members of the Hierarchy and is concerned with the theme of Love, which is the fundamental hierarchical theme and motive. He says to Them: “Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face; now we know in part, but then shall we know even as we are known.” He there points towards the future progress of the Hierarchy—a progress which remains as yet only a vague promise, lacking form and shape. But he wrote for initiates to whom love was a growing, vital concern, and to whom love and its practice meant light and the basic motif of all living, divine activity. It is not possible to reveal the will of God and the motivating Purpose of His manifesting Self, except to Those Who have demonstrated perfected love and Who register no sense of disunion or the faintest reaction to separateness.

At Shamballa, the Great Lives Who function there not only see manifestation whole and apart from all the limitations of time, but They feel all the major evolutionary impulses which are bringing the developing world into line with the divine Will. They embody those impulses not in terms of progressive movement, but in terms of one great divine and spiritual reaction. This idea can perhaps be best understood by you in terms of the Eternal AUM which is the symbol of the Eternal NOW. You have been told, and it has been demonstrated, that the AUM is composed of one major Sound, three minor sounds, and seven subsidiary vibratory tones. So it is with the Will of God which is embodied and held in synthesis by the Members of the Council Chamber. To Them, as They “hold the Will of God in solution, it is one clear note; as They see that Will in motion, it is three abiding chords, carrying outwards into all the worlds the Purpose of the ONE Who for aeons will abide; as They impel that Will to demonstrate, it is seven vibratory tones, drawing out into the reflected worlds the structure of the Plan. And thus the note, the chords and tone produce the Plan, reveal the Purpose and indicate God’s Will.” This is a quotation from certain of the ancient Archives which constitute the study of the Masters; they relate to the nature of Shamballa, its work and emanating energies.

It will be apparent to you how little you can understand of the Shamballa intention when you realise that it is not easy for you to see any true distinction between unity and synthesis and, at the same time, how impossible it is for me to make the distinction clear. All I can say is that synthesis is, whilst unity is achieved and is the reward of action and effort. As you progress upon the Path of Initiation the meaning of unity clarifies. As you direct yourself towards the Way of the Higher Evolution synthesis emerges. More than that it would be useless for me to say.

Chaotic Mess – Rare Slow Soul Magic – Dream 12-12-2025

Sleep last night came in two segments 12 – 2:30 and after an hour of TV, 4 to 7. In “A Discovery of Witches” season two last night Diana masters the ninth knot, the spell of endings and beginnings, the knot of completion(s). Implicit is inherent in this is also the tenth knot. Diana a weaver and time walker prepares to travel back to modern day.

The first part is in the early sleep and shallow. I am with the ex-wife. She wants to show me what is going on in the village. She insists that I go to see what has become of the village pubs. She is curious and very nosey. She wants all the gossip. Reluctantly I go with her and one of the pubs is under new management. He is trying to make a go of it. The pub is in a state of mess and undergoing renovation. A part of it is open for business. We go in and he asks what I want. I ask for a pint of Guiness and it takes long while to pour and settle. The ex-wife has a half of bitter and proceeds to go around chatting at/with everyone else in the pub. I ask the landlord about his plans.

We move off to the next pub. This is more lively and all the village folk some from out of town and some born are ostentatiously getting pissed  up. The air is of forced jollity, almost an anxious jollity. This pub is better lit. The locals all stare at me. Once again the ex-wife works the room talking to everyone and gossiping about life in the village and in general. I do not see the point of it in the dream. The pub is a mess and someone needs to do a glasses round and wipe down tables. There is a hint of Christmas party and the TV in the pub is blaring away in the background. It is harsh to the senses.

I awake for some poor TV, a pill and two lion bars.

Back now in the dream I am upstairs in a retreat centre type house. It is redbrick and old. On the other side of a single track road is a chest height red-brick and flint wall behind which is a substantial weir and mill race. The river is powerful and the water deep and of a green hue due to the weeds. I know the building I am in is aligned to the old water mill. It is a part of the complex. The feel is very similar  to Llangollen. The smell is similar too; we are near mountains. I am lying on the bed with the window open. The net curtains are blowing lightly in the breeze and I can hear the deep bass rumble of the water on the weir.

I hear a key in the door downstairs and in walks Paul and Emma. (Walker). They walk through into the kitchen and I can hear the keys being thrown into a small ceramic pot / ashtray. The pot is glazed agate green. I can hear Paul complaining to Emma about me. He complains how things can be messy after I have been and that although the mess is not mine it is in response to me that the chaos and mess ensues.  He is not happy about me being there and wants me to go. His unwelcome is widely held among many people. I do not do what they deem I ought to.

I come down stairs and Paul intuits that I have heard what he has been saying. He asks if I have heard.  I affirm. He says that there is no point pretending then. I say that I am not in the least bit upset. I have something to show him. In the kitchen are plates and cutlery unwashed. He looks at them with scorn. We all go out into a walled garden and to a stand-up wooden table in a “beer-garden” private to the property and which overlooks the weir.

I say to Paul that I possess a special rare type of magic. This he doubts as otherwise I would have used the magic to clean up. I say that this magic is not of a material kind, the kind for tricks and show. I say that my magic is a special kind of magic known by some as Soul magic. This magic is of a very slow effect. It is a slow Soul magic. He is sceptical.

I hold up my left hand and a brown hen’s egg appears in it. This catches his attention. It cracks and the top comes off. It is now like a soft boiled egg ready for eating in “dippy eggs”. I say to him that my magic, the deeper magic, pertains only to the Soul. It is not mundane. In the dream he understands that the egg is a metaphor for the Souls. I say that yes I can and do work directly with the Soul(s).

The dreaming view looks down at the soft yolky egg from above and then zooms out to a side view. A small amount of yolk has run down from the egg along my fingers and onto my white inner wrist. I say that even Soul magic is of two kinds, the magic of the Souls evolving through lifetimes and that of the spark within. True magic is about the creation and enveloping of the spark within a Soular casing, the egg of lives. The ultimate magic is about liberation in which the ovoid shell, the eggy casing of the Soul is rent and evaporates only to leave the spark within and thence throughout. Soul magic is about encapsulation and liberation. It is beyond the sight of most and not to the everyday taste.

As they watch the egg starts to dissolve shimmering into space with a shimmering of tiny golden insubstantial flecks. Leaving a tiny bright yellow-orange radiant spark or flame. Which is suspended above my fingers. Paul and Emma are temporarily transfixed. They come to with a jolt and all they can see is my upstretched left hand with fingers touching from where the egg once was. They can see a small trickle of bright yellow yolk against the white inner skin of my wrist.

The dream zooms out and looks directly into the depths of the water going over the mill race weir. I know that those prone to the chaos of the West struggle to see the beautiful order and patterns of time.

I come to and feel the stiffness in my hips and lower back…

Ashmole 972 and Tarot 20

The Bodleian Library has a number of the so-called Ashmole documents partially digitized and published online.

Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum, vol. 2.

Shelfmark: Bodleian Library MS. Ashmole 972

This one looks like Tarot 20 and has a very similar feel.

Some of the other images on line look very proto-tarot.

In one other llustration it suggests that there are concealed answers for a freed Soul which can be revealed from understanding the symbols displayed..

———————————————————–

Ashmole

Medieval and early modern manuscripts and papers donated to the Bodleian by antiquary Elias Ashmole (1617-1692).

Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) was born and educated in Lichfield. He began his career as a solicitor, but in 1644 entered the service of the Crown as a commissioner of excise. He entered the Office of Arms as Windsor herald after the Restoration, and retired in 1672.

His collection comprises important medical, astrological, and alchemical manuscripts, and is also strong in heraldry, local history, and, to a lesser extent, in Middle English and 17th-century poetry. The foundation of his Museum at Oxford was made possible by his acquisition by bequest from his friend John Tradescant of a large collection of ‘curiosities’. They arrived when the building was ready in 1683, and it was here that his bequest of manuscripts was housed until their transference to the Bodleian in 1860.

A Discovery of Witches – Thread

Whilst I was in hospital I came upon this UK TV series on Netflix. It seemed that I had already started watching it according to Netflix. I did not recall this.  So I started to watch again. So far it is enjoyable.

A Discovery of Witches is a British fantasy television series based on the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness, named after the first book in the trilogy.

Diana Bishop, a historian and reluctant witch, unexpectedly discovers a bewitched manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. This discovery forces her back into the world of magic in order to unravel the secrets it holds about magical beings. She is offered help by a mysterious biochemist and vampire Matthew Clairmont. Despite a long-held mistrust between witches and vampires, they form an alliance and set out to protect the book and solve the mysteries hidden within while dodging threats from the creature world.

—-

Discovery of Witches is a 2011 historical-fantasy novel and the debut novel by American scholar Deborah Harkness. It follows Diana Bishop, a history of science professor at Yale University, as she embraces her magical blood after finding a long-thought-lost manuscript and engages in a forbidden romance with a charming vampire, Matthew Clairmont.

When Diana Bishop returns to Oxford University, her life is flipped upside down. While researching in the library, Diana requests a book called Ashmole 782. This manuscript, also known as the Book of Life, has been missing for over 150 years. As soon as Diana touches the ancient manuscript, her powers are activated. Frightened by her clear cosmic connection to Ashmole 782, Diana returns the book. It appears, however, that her discovery had already caught the attention of other creatures, which results in a series of events that slowly brings her witch heritage and family back into her life.

—————————————————–

Diana is  cast as a young academic investigating Alchemy partly autobiographically inspired on behalf of the author. The first few episodes are very good for Oxford university tourism. The photography is top notch.

Ashmole was a founder member of The Royal Society and this is his coat of arms.

Note Hermes bearing the golden Caduceus top right. Note also the Breton symbol around the lower central panel.

Aside from founding the Ashmolean museum he is famous for collecting things like this:

Theatrvm chemicvm britannicum : containing severall poeticall pieces of our famous English philosophers, who have written the hermetique mysteries in their owne ancient language

by Ashmole, Elias, 1617-1692; Cross, Thomas, fl. 1632-1682; Vaughan, Robert, 17th cent; Goddard, John, fl. 1645-1671

Given where I did my Ph.D. and my interest in things witchy and Alchemy related I have found something to look into a bit while I recuperate.

A new thread to explore?
