Magical Thinking and Arrogance

I am already bored with the endless TV footage of Trump with his droning on, bragging and put downs of anyone who is not him. His magical thinking in which his actions and words are free of real world consequences is crass. It was so nice to have had a few years without him soap boxing on a daily basis into the media. Oh well we have a few more years of this. If he imagines endorsing Tesla is going to promote sales globally, he may be mistaken. The MAGA sheep may buy but a Trump endorsement is not a good sales pitch worldwide. He may have a “Bud Lite” effect.

Maybe I should contact Dignitas soon.

Not surprisingly the conflict in Ukraine has not been solved in a day. Without the EU further sanctions are unlikely to upset Putin. Trump is the new poster boy for BRICS. He does not perhaps, get this.

Magical thinking, I the Don will get Vlad the Impaler to stop war in Ukraine, “Ta-dah!”

With friends like Trump who needs enemies?

A lot of people have some kind of magical thinking which arises out of their arrogance.

People can be so damned cock-sure without basis that they are blind, myopic and practising auto-proctology, looking with pride at their own sphincters. They are caught up in their own bubble-world. They imagine that the world loves them, that it will flock to them, kowtow, and share of the radiant brilliance of their self-diagnosed omniscience. It may not occur that they are wreaking havoc into the web of life because of their self-centred egotistical obsessions. They would not give a shit in any case.

Trump is a mirror for many, a mirror into which they fear to look with honesty. Humanity has called forth the likes of him. He is a sign of the times.

“Me first, ME, ME, ME. Everyone else is nasty and mean, only I am the hero. They, the plebs, do not understand. The world is against me, conspiring, poor me. It is not fair mummy.! They don’t appreciate me and see just how lucky they are to have me!!”

There is a problem that when some do not get their own way emotional drama results. I have never heard a US president slag off his predecessors with such glee. It is not statesman like nor edifying. It is petty.

Marcus Aurelius he is most certainly not.

This soap opera cannot be cancelled by network. It looks like running for few years yet, even if the ratings drop.

I wonder exactly how much damage can be done in four years?

That remains to be seen and perhaps endured.

OMG What Have We Done?

From time to time people can get very caught up in the brouhaha of a moment of confrontational politics. They can become polarised in thinking and very stubborn. They can entrench and vote against something just to spite others or to “prove” a point. The next day they may wake up and for just a fleeting instant have a realisation that they have been hasty and made a bad decision. Then before their eyes the long drawn out tedium of Brexit unfolds. The “wise, mature and measured” presidency of Trump clicks into gear. The thing which they voted for unfolds in ways which they had not ever considered, because calm thought was never a part of the process for them. It is too late to undo what has been set in motion.

This sentiment of OMG what have I/we done is not restricted to politics it happens on the micro and nano scale in our daily lives. People stick with their “decisions” even if they are stupid in order to save “face”. They can be very stubborn and adamant in their near fervent justifications but deep down we all know when we are kidding ourselves.

I will place a bet; the Trump presidency will not increase world harmony as it is holistically measured.

It seems to me that we all have to endure this strange American psychodrama where everything is a “what is in it for me” deal. That a US president is even gobbing off about Greenland, Panama and Canada is a bit of a shocker.  It may indeed be time for the USA to try its hand as being an overt imperial power as opposed to pseudo-covert.

If we can take any lessons from the invasion of Ukraine it is that the bogeyman Russian conventional army can be stopped in its tracks even when it has air superiority. The Russians can probably endure more loss and body bags than the softer western nations. Remember it was the USA which hyped the Russian and Chinese bogeymen to all and sundry.

Now it seems Trump is playing kissy-kissy with Vlad.

OMG what have we done? Is probably not yet a widespread sentiment in the US of A.

I remember watching a news interview with an African man about the January 6th Capitol attack. He said it was just like watching the goings on in his country. The USA was no more sophisticated than a country in turmoil between corrupt factions. Since Independence there had been many coups and changes of government. The rule or law had failed.

The division bell has sounded and the snowball of US isolationism has started rolling. If any sensible calculations were made, there may be an error. Will a man with six prior bankruptcies be the saviour which makes America great again?

There is a part of me which will be pleasantly surprised if it all works out well. That part is not holding its breath.

On a personal note, our residence rights expire in March next year.  If the anti-immigration mantra continues to be harshly chanted, we too may have to sling our hooks.

We reap what we sow…

Now Brits stand in line with their blue passports and wait, just like those from the kingdom of Lesotho, the DRC and Rwanda.

I know let us send our immigrants to Rwanda it is a stable country and safe…with nice backhanders…

What a cunning plan…

The Un-statesman Like Hallway Bully

I have never before seen an American president behave in such an un-statesman like manner. My opinion of the USA has gone downhill. It might be argued that this does not matter because they have the power. A president who has lost his own battle with power is likely to be ever more punitive to people he sees as enemies, adversaries and ever more willing to listen to sycophants. He will not hold back his vengeance. He will listen only to those whose opinion he wants to hear.

In the course of few short weeks, he has sided with Russia against Ukraine and to an extent NATO and Europe. He is paranoid that everyone is out to screw him. He sees his own twisted image in the mirror.

This is what he does will alliances and agreements signed by the prior law abiding heads of state. I am not sure of the constitutional vagaries. A deal with him is not worth the paper it is written on.

So, we awake to a new reality.

Article 5

In 1949, the primary aim of the North Atlantic Treaty – NATO’s founding treaty – was to create a pact of mutual assistance to counter the risk that the Soviet Union would seek to extend its control of Eastern Europe to other parts of the continent.

Every participating country agreed that this form of solidarity was at the heart of the Treaty, effectively making Article 5 on collective defence a key component of the Alliance.

Article 5 provides that if a NATO Ally is the victim of an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence as an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the Ally attacked.

Article 5

“The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.”

This corner stone, this foundation stone, has been called into question by the “stable genius”. I don’t know how many shares in Gazprom might result.

It is pretty clear that much of what is wrong with the world, as it currently stands, has some causal origination in the USA. Well, they now have the president they deserve and we all have to live with the knock on consequences.

This morning, I had the idea that maybe the Chinese should invade Taiwan. The US economy is way more dependent on the semiconductor chips made there than anyone else. TSMC makes most of these. USA would then be fighting a country of similar size and power rather than a small state of ~ 30 million {now} people who are getting the shit kicked out of them by a powerful aggressor. But no, the USA wants to put its boot in too!! Take that you bastard Ukrainians!!

Thanks to one man’s gargantuan but fragile ego.

Trump may have the cards but Taiwan has the chips.

Bullies rarely pick on people their own size.

I am far from optimistic as to where things go from here. Viewed from one angle if there has to be a mass dis-incarnation in order to save the planet, then maybe that is what is needed. Nuclear winter could solve anthropogenic climate heating.

Isolationist, elitist, we know best thinking, can often preclude a massive downfall. It takes a while.

With “friends” like Trump who needs enemies?

I am struggling to believe what my own eyes have seen and the question is, “is this simply the starter for ten” so to speak. How much further down the shitter will humanity be dragged in this massive psycho-drama?

I have been told that this is my very last incarnation here…

Talking Behind Someone’s Back and Fait Accompli

At the moment there is a bit of furore in the press that Trump et al. are taking with Putin et al. behind the backs of Ukraine, Europe and the UK. They are doing this in the Machiavellian home of Saud.

People seem not to like this yet they talk behind the backs of others on a regular basis. It is a play straight out of the forceful manipulation handbook / playbook, cobble together some cunning plan and then present it to the absentee(s) as a fait accompli. Should they not accept they are branded ungrateful and non-cooperative even if they have to bend over grab their ankles and take it up the arse without lubricant.

The praetorians always know what is best for the plebs. The plebs should thank their lucky stars.

Behind closed doors cabals are not inclusive. They may pretend and profess to be, but that is bullshit.

These cabals are part of what is euphemistically termed “management practice”. The 1922 committee is an example of behind doors stitch up. I have been on the periphery of such behaviours and perhaps on the receiving end of fait accompli. It is a Don Corleone offer even without the nocturnal equine encouragement.

Wherever actual transparency as opposed to the public relations version of that is absent, gossip spreads faster than Covid 19 at a race meeting / piss up. I saw firsthand on Twitter / X how misinformation and BS spread faster than a Los Angeles wild fire blown by a warm breeze.

A forced “agreement” rarely has longevity. A contract based on gossip and hearsay lacks solid foundations.

I have never myself appointed a spokesperson or port-parole so if any charlatan pretends to speak on my behalf, they are lying. If someone says behind closed doors that they know what I am after, what I might want / like they are delusional, mendacious and manipulative. Yet I could not stop anyone from casting themselves as such. People may speculate, that is at best inaccurate and at worst dangerous.

Many people are so sure that they know how to sort a situation out, how to bring it to a close. Such premature omniscience is rarely able to hold back adamant opinion. It rarely occurs to these that they may be wrong. One cannot change the view of an adamant dogmatic by persuasion.

Do you talk behind people’s back?

Do you make cunning plans without inclusive consultation?

Are you a Trump mini-me?

Putin Must Be Very Happy

Trump and his pal have done more to weaken NATO than any squabble in Europe. In just a few days he has made it clear that he is an unreliable ally. Trying to force increased defence spending by threat. Slagging people off. He has made concessions on Ukraine unilaterally. He has started a trade war with many including Canada, Mexico and China. Vlad is probably breaking out the vintage champagne. The Ayatollahs in Iran are also well happy.

ваше здоровье Donald…

To say to Europeans that there is a new Sherriff in town is to make a huge mis-calculation if indeed any were made. It is not a reference which transfers, which is portable. It stems from a serious lack of awareness. Domestically things are not great. Inflation due to trade war may seem short term but it has yet to bite. To threaten the “sanctity” of Stonewall, is unwise. Unrest comes in the warmer months.

If the USA is an unreliable ally, then Putin could well become a reliable one. The cheap Russian gas could flow again to the German car industry. Without Europe sanctions have less of a bite. Trump is making the vacuum.

He is haemorrhaging friends at quite a rate. There is a lot of bravado and considerable complacency.

My dream hints at an American civil war. Divide and rule can go badly wrong…

We shall see how things pan out…

Not a good start…

The Slippery Slope to Totalitarianism

The Cultural Revolution, formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It was launched by Mao Zedong in 1966 and lasted until 1976. Its publicly stated goal was to preserve Chinese socialism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society.

In May 1966, with the help of the Cultural Revolution Group, Mao launched the Revolution and said that bourgeois elements had infiltrated the government and society with the aim of restoring capitalism. Mao called on young people to bombard the headquarters and proclaimed that “to rebel is justified”. Mass upheaval began in Beijing with Red August in 1966. Many young people, mainly students, responded by forming cadres of Red Guards throughout the country. Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung became revered within his cult of personality. In 1967, emboldened radicals began seizing power from local governments and party branches, establishing new revolutionary committees in their place while smashing public security, procuratorate and judicial systems. These committees often split into rival factions, precipitating armed clashes among the radicals. After the fall of Lin Biao in 1971, the Gang of Four became influential in 1972, and the Revolution continued until Mao’s death in 1976, soon followed by the arrest of the Gang of Four.

The first step towards totalitarianism is to purge those who are against you and promote loyal brown nosers and supporters. Sycophantic yes-men are preferred over anyone who queries even if said queries are wise.

The intelligentsia must be crippled and undermined, democracy called into question and belittled. Propaganda is more important than fact. Short adamant statements hook and are preferred over detail.

Any voice to the contrary must be silenced, preferably in public and painfully so.

The cult of the personality is on the rise in humanity at large.

Substance and ethics are demoted and no longer important. Mini-me types are cloning themselves. We are sleep walking into very retrograde times.

People are easily drawn into group mind which prevents true thinking. Grievance can be exploited to garner support. Give someone an enemy and they will fall in behind you against them. Enemies unite rabbles and crowds.

Postulate:

Humanity has an anathema for inconvenient truths.

Humanity prefers any story or “plan” which means that they do not have to change their ways. If someone says that anthropogenic climate change is exaggerated that is easier to believe, because they want to. There is confirmation bias. People prefer to stick their heads in the sand rather than change. The bringer of messages which go against the inconvenient truths is a hero, a friend, “I told you so!”

Goebbels comments here on the power of mantra, the repetition of which can be black magic.

Postulate:

There is no such thing as a sustainable quick fix, this is an inconvenient truth.

Immediacy does not solve anything, knee jerks are never considered they are at best reactive.

Focused blame cultures and look-at-me attempts to fix “single-issue” problems are misguided if popular. It is easier to blame external factors than to accept responsibility and work hard at root cause.

Postulate:

China and Russia were never communist despite finger pointing to the contrary. They were / are totalitarian or authoritarian at best.

The bogey man of communism is an American invention, it has never been realised. Western quasi-socialism of the last century is the closest humanity has come to that ideal.

Postulate:

The cult of the personality is a very dangerous and a slippery slope. This too is an inconvenient truth.

There are numerous examples of this cult currently active and perhaps growing in the so-called democratic West. People can get easily caught up in the faux-euphoria of group mind and its sense of belonging.

Narcissists however have absolutely zero notion of loyalty and are fickle, motivated only by their own desires. Supporters are not shown the loyalty expected and demanded of them.

Humanity is again on the slippery slope to widespread totalitarianism pretending to be democracy.

Insuring Against Apocalypse

“Climate-related extreme weather events will become both more frequent and more violent, resulting in ever-scarcer insurance and ever-higher premiums,” a US Senate report on the insurance market warned just last month. “Climate change is no longer just an environmental problem. It is a looming economic threat.”

The big insurers – State Farm, AllState and Farmers, among others – insist they have no choice but to raise rates because of factors including sky-high construction costs and what they call “catastrophe exposure”, especially in California where they face regulatory hurdles unmatched in other states. The industry points to State Farm, whose credit rating was downgraded last year, as a casualty of these pressures.

The Guardian

“Driven by a desire to maximize profits, property casualty insurance companies … have engaged in a troubling trend of dropping California homeowners’ insurance policies like flies,” said the complaint, filed in San Diego County Superior Court. A spokesperson for Liberty Mutual declined to comment on the litigation.

The inability to get coverage is reflected in the number of policies picked up by California’s FAIR Plan, which as of September had about 452,000 policies, up from a little over 203,000 four years ago. FAIR Plan’s website says its claims exposure is nearly $6 billion in Pacific Palisades alone.

“The situation has been a train wreck coming down the track for a while,” said Rick Dinger, president of Crescenta Valley Insurance, an independent brokerage in Glendale.

Los Angeles Times

“There’s been a mass exodus of big players from the market in these parts of California,” Ben Keys, a real estate and finance professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, told a conference Friday.

“We’ve seen enormous non-renewals recently,” he said.

On Wednesday, California’s insurance commissioner, Ricardo Lara, announced that homeowners in areas affected by and around the fires would be protected for a year against non-renewal and cancellation of coverage.

This type of measure protected more than a million contracts in 2024.

In 1968, the coastal state set up a public insurance scheme, called FAIR, for homeowners who could no longer find a private insurer.

This “band-aid” was supposed to be temporary while people moved from one insurance policy to another, but has now expanded well beyond its intended use, lamented Keys, pointing out that its exposure had risen from $50 billion in 2018 to more than $450 billion today.

To bring companies back on board, Commissioner Lara has also initiated a reform process authorizing them to increase premiums on condition that they do not apply any geographical exclusions.

France 24

My hypothesis is that climate change will render larger and larger areas non-insurable or exorbitant. As a rule of thumb people lending mortgages require insurance for the collateral upon which the mortgage is based.

The press I have read today suggest that many US insurers are being more argumentative already about settling claims in full. Premiums have sky rocketed and others are not offering renewals, they are dropping customers with force majeure risk.

I wonder what percentage of LA home owners have gone bareback with no insurance.

Who is going to fund the rebuild?

Perhaps many will have to sell a still smoking plot of land.

Trendy neighbourhoods may lose their trendy status if houses burn down.

Tempest Ciaran caused us around 3500 euros of damage here. The insurers were helpful and reimbursed 80%. But they made a slightly threatening sound that we should make sure that all our trees are safe and tended by experts. That this was our responsibility. We have ~100 trees. The French government allowed the insurers, by decree, to increase their premiums.

The insurance policies will get “funky” said one article. Implying complex wording and perhaps multiple small print exclusions.

There is a non-virtuous cycle, no insurance, no mortgage, no house build.

Places with the street names like Water Lane hint at flooding.

We had to, as a prophylactic, pump out our vide sanitaire, a kind of basement over the weekend. When we went to the local hardware store, the shelf which once contained water pumps was de-stocked.

Water Wind and Fire, water and wind, wind and fire.

I’ll predict that during 2025 there will be even more quasi-apocalyptic events, which will have an ever increasing impact on economies. People will be unhappy that although they live in a risk prone region, the risk materialises.

They will be upset that increasingly they cannot insure against apocalypse.

Lebensraum – Spazio vitale – Hakkō ichiu

These are terms used by the axis powers of the second world war to justify expansionist policies, land grabs. In which ethnic cleansing can be envisaged and the lower less wonderful, exterminated. The divine right, the sense of entitlement even of destiny are invoked to whip up the crowd, inspire and focus intent. Korean women were there to service Japanese soldiers. Poles were encamped and slaughtered. Sub humans were terminated and eugenic experiments undertaken. Blond Aryan breed mares were inseminated to produce more of the master race.

We have land grabs in the middle East with settlers and people eying up a new home nearer the coast in Gaza. We have Trump musing about Greenland and making Canada a state. The rhetoric though less open and obvious is in a similar vein. I suspect to some the life of a Muslim is considered less important. Many are brown as well, to boot. We are in similar territory to the 1930s.

“Every prime minister and state president in South Africa from 1948 to the end of apartheid in 1994 was a member of the Afrikaner Broederbond.”

From Wikipedia

—–

“In June 1918 disaffected Afrikaners were brought together in a new organisation called Jong Suid-Afrika (Young South Africa). The following year its name was changed to the Afrikaner Broederbond (AB). The organisation had one main aim: to further Afrikaner nationalism in South Africa – to maintain Afrikaner culture, develop an Afrikaner economy, and to gain control of the South African government.

During the 1930s the Afrikaner Broederbond became increasingly political, creating several public front organisations – especially the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge (FAK – Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Societies) which acted as an umbrella organisation for Afrikaner cultural groups, and took over the original cultural remit of the AB.

The Afrikaner Broederbond, meanwhile, evolved into a highly influential ‘secret’ society. Its political influence became apparent in 1934 when JBM Hertzog merged the National Party (NP) with Jan Smuts’ South African Party (SAP), to form the United Party (UP). Radical members of the NP broke away from the ‘fusion government’ to form the Herenigde Nasionale Party (HNP – ‘Reunited National Party’) under the leadership of DF Malan. The AB threw its full support behind the HNP, and its members dominated the new party – especially in the Afrikaner strongholds of Transvaal and Orange Free State.”

The political nationalist far right appears to be gaining ground in a number of places. There is a very real chance that an outwardly sanitised far right party could hold power soon in France. There appears to be in public displays of friendship amongst the right in a number of countries, we do not know what collusion there is behind closed doors.

Ought we to be concerned? Yes, probably.

It appears that we may not have taken the lessons from last time.

I think it wise that the EU develops/has its own social media platforms…to avoid the US near monopoly. I sense that the war against TikTok in the USA is about influence and nothing to do with sale of data and espionage. Silencing it is desired just like Al Jazeera has been shut down in some countries. Russia Today has been off air for a while now.

The propaganda war is alive and kicking.

Amazon is seeking to make a new satellite network, there are robots, drones and AI. Denial of internet service is a very powerful lever.

Are we getting closer to science fiction – yup.

A thin end of the wedge might seem thin at first but soon it can be driven home.

Peace and goodwill to all men is not apparent in the news as this “new” year starts…

Some Speculations on the Externalisation of the So-called Hierarchy.

In the blue books opus Kuhl outlines a provisional plan for the externalisation of the so-called hierarchy. As is well known no plan survives first contact intact. The major problem in conceptualising this externalisation is one of timescale. Most people struggle to think beyond the span of a lifetime, some struggle with minutes. What he outlines spans many lifetimes and centuries. He suggests that we are now towards the end of the stage of the forerunner and heading into the initial stages of the externalisation proper. This means that there are probably some young disciples and initiates already incarnate and in the process of maturing.

When I first stating kicking around new age circles in my mid-thirties, I noticed a prevalence of grey hair and a mild condescension towards me, despite the fact that I was a lecturer at a top university. I was a bit scruffy smoked Marlboro and drank Stella. I was not into a cups of tea and cucumber sandwiches followed by a slice of Battenberg cake.

There is a generational problem.

I, for example, don’t get social media and rarely use a mobile ‘phone I am not umbilically linked. Now that the broadband has a landline, I will use the mobile even less if that is in fact possible.

I personally, after living hermit-like, would struggle to relate to anyone in their twenties and they to me.

Many of those who paved the way are getting long in the tooth. I had a look at the board make up of one educational charity, the youngest was six years older than me and all the others were seventy plus. Governance by the elderly without new blood is heading to extinction. It is likely to be out of touch with the times. Staid and dated.

There must be a way of attracting and including younger people if these old organisations are to survive. The basic human problem of personality is that many find it hard to relinquish power. Biden is an example in case.

I’ll speculate that a young upstart initiate will grate against the personality of an older disciple no matter how badly they want to serve. There may be cock waving about initiatory status. Even though Kuhl says that most will be unaware stating that it is only at the third initiation that the initiate is fully aware of the fact and procedure.

How would authority react?

In normal politics one might send Anthony Blinken to discuss with the council of the hierarchy. But I cannot envisage some corporate like entity for him to discuss with. Who would be Trump’s hierarchy liaison pick, Jeff Bezos?

It is likely that suspected members of the externalisation would be kept under surveillance.

It would be a non sequitur that tried and tested “normal” ways of political interaction would be inappropriate. People would struggle to get their heads around just how very different an initiate of high degree might be. There will be transference phenomena in which people would transfer their behaviours and thoughts onto a being which does not share them and whose approach to The One Life is paradigmatically different.

Many of the initial experiments will fail leaving behind personal debris and probably karmic problems. Maltreatment of initiates is possibly karmically costly. Those who are first on the beaches in a landing like Normandy have the highest casualty rate. Slowly through trial and error a modus operandi will be found. Those individuals going first will have crisis and their own progress accelerated.

In my opinion the biggest barrier to a successful externalisation remains orthodox academia and science and engineering in particular. Without the key of proof closed concrete mind cannot be unlocked. I cannot envisage progress unless many incarnate into roles which place them in the academic midst. Those on the second or teaching ray may choose so to do.

“Word” grammar has suggested to me that using phrases which express uncertainty lessens impact. AI is going to be a problem too. Not everything is black and white, sorry Word you are a bit of a knob.

Humanity likes the quick, the flashy and the shiny. There may be an aversion to working across decades to get results, for which there are no like buttons or Trustpilot ratings. Genuine work on self is unlikely to attract a horde of followers or paid subscribers….

Hmn…
