Where – Decision Making

Ever since I was stupid enough to develop a course on “Decision Making” I have unsurprisingly been making decisions. I wrote this course under the umbrella of my dreaming colour Indigo Blue.

Here is a slide from said course. Without blowing my own trumpet overly it is a good thought provoking course which has application up to the highest levels.

We have already decided that we need to downsize. The house is way too big and hence expensive to run for our needs and the garden at 2 acres is massive. Our rough parameters are at around 100 square metres for house and less than 2000 square metres {tops} garden. That is about it and of course we are limited in available price.

Next week we have a “when” data input. I will discuss with an orthopaedic surgeon the possibility of a second hip replacement. The basic logic being that if he thinks I should wait we have a time window in which to move house. I am more able than I was last year. If he thinks go ahead, then this year will be operation and recuperation.

Maybe if no operation we will put the house on the market and the level of interest or otherwise will advise on whether we can move and how big the kitty of funds is.

If we are lucky enough be granted rights to remain and live in France we have three possible countries, France, UK and Ireland. There are no important relational ties which restrict choice.

Were we to apply and gain French citizenship in due course we could choose anywhere in the EU.

The where is geo-located to Northwestern Europe. Parts of the UK and France are prohibitively expensive.

It seems likely that we will have to sell, put the money in the bank, and rent for a while. The sale process in France is not as facile as in the UK. We could try to get the stars to align but that could be stressful.

This means we could pretty much live anywhere in the above countries provided that we are happy to shrink capital by six months or a year’s rent.

The notion of a different kind of living / location has come to fore.

So far we have had, quaint village centre, isolated in a middle of a wood on a private estate, on a working farm and in our own compound with pond and a river. We have learned scale and “estate-management”.

Two first pass options have appeared, in the middle of a cathedral quaint town or next to a tidal river…The tide provides a rhythm we sampled once before on holiday in Cornwall.

Because we live in a “pocket” we have lacked direct sight of sunrise and sunset, this is something I might like to rectify.

It is a kind of open ended slightly weird feeling not knowing where nor with any strong inclination. A part of the motivation for coming here was access to a photonic cluster with laser industries. That is not important now.

We do need access to reasonably high level medical care for things like haematology – myeloma but that can be at a 40 minute to hour journey time. We are in the French system which has been very generous and kind.

Might be nice to be a bit warmer, with less rain.

We don’t know where, we do have some incoming on when.

The “doing what” question seems to be converging on more of the same. In other words we will garden, do DIY, meditate and dream. That seems to be the entire scope. Nothing big, no interaction with cheeses big or otherwise. With a smaller garden we could go bonsai like in detail and take a more minute care. Which would be a new approach for us.

There are a few more years before we are eligible for UK state pension which will give a small increase in income.

Group Control and Decision Making

It is not unusual for groups of people to gather together and try to control what an individual outside of that group is doing. They may even have the illusion that said individual is keen or desperate to join their group as per the famous Garry Glitter song about gangs. Groups by their nature have real difficulty seeing and assimilating perspectives outside of the rarefied air of their Olympian group. We Gods know. The group may even believe that they know what is best for the “lucky” individual. Being quasi-corporate they can only see a quasi-corporate “answer” to whatever the imagined problem may be.

They can get quite complacent if something approaching within-group consensus is found.

The problem is that they can be very mistaken and totally unaware. There is very little one can do when a group has made up its mind. Nietzsche is attributed this quotation.

You can decide for yourself regarding some of the “sanity” currently coming out of the USA.

Groups may consider it sound to offer the lucky person a fait accompli. Having discussed only amidst themselves they may not consider how it might wash with an individual outside. Such a thing happened with the so-called peace efforts expecting Ukraine to suck it up and be grateful. The individual is then blamed and scapegoated for not accepting the divine arrogance of group omniscience.

“That pesky pleb should count his lucky stars!! He should be very grateful!!”

This phenomenon can be found on all sides in academia, industry, business, politics and amongst the righteous “they” down the pub.

Groups do not always make the best and most inclusive decisions because they cannot see outside their own Venn diagram walls. A collection of frogs at the bottom of a well, even though it may agree amongst itself, has not seen a pacific sunset nor has it gone on a silent retreat in the mountains for three years. It might imagine itself more knowledgeable and experienced than it actually is.

Groups with corporate mind always want to deal with other groups in which the socio-political hierarchy is known. They are obsessed with hierarchy and group positions. They struggle with even the notion of a non-affiliated individual. Group to group interaction can be even less inclusive. There are often power struggles and a great deal of negotiation. It is so often about power and preservation of status quo. It is about control.

The object of negotiation can be totally unaware of the blessings, he/she is about to receive.

People are people and the tendency is to do the same shit over and over.

Coming to a Head – Decisions

Quite a while back someone suggested to me that I write a course on “Decision Making” and stupidly I accepted. Without blowing my own trumpet unduly, that course is widely applicable up to the very highest levels. But of course, no big-wig or big-cheese, would ever accept that they need to learn and otherwise be educated about their quasi-divine decision making.

At the moment various indicators are incoming apropos of an impending decision.

I’ll speculate that I am way more decisive than average and that I am unafraid to make unilateral decisions. I rarely feel the need to discuss, chin-wag or otherwise chew things over.  This appears to surprise some.

To give an example.

A few months back I had a zoom call with a European VC I was acquainted with a long time ago. I was seeking clarity as to how the VC community might see me based upon my past enterprises and what to do with my current circumstances. He said that, based upon the narrative I gave him about a company I co-founded, I would be considered “difficult” to work with and that “French deals don’t travel”. He hinted at “reputation” but would not be pressed. On this basis I dropped any plan to look for VC funding to start a company and shelved the faint notion of a France based start-up. The omens are not good. There are barriers, showstoppers from the get-go.

One can not always know when one is aiding / advising a decision. It can be unwitting or conscious. One could be a deciding factor without having any idea thereof.

The recent CAT / CT scan data concerning a largely fused thoracic spine consistent with a diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) diagnosis is a factor to add to the decision making funnel. There is no treatment, it will only get worse. This is a factor suggesting that house downsize increases in importance. This DISH will not ameliorate my COPD as the bony growth is already impinging on my right lung.

Soon we will test the back to blighty notion with a visit to Jersey to see how it feels to be surrounded by people largely anglophone. This notion points at moving to a low-cost, less desirable, region of the UK property market. A significant contrary factor is the anecdotal poor state of the NHS. The French system has been very generous to us in terms of funding and accessibility to care and prompt diagnostics.

We are in a beggars cannot be choosers state in that we don’t have hundreds of thousands of pounds to pay for private healthcare. Things here are in motion and work well. Don’t fix what is not broken.

There are no real personal anchors for us here, to keep us tethered. A lot is due to happen in the next month or so and that is when the funnel will close. This blog and my patent are up for renewal, for example.

Things, whatever they may be, are coming to a head, or in other terms the funnel is starting to pinch. These funnels are unidirectional and not reversible.

The feeling is that “things” are coming to a head. The fact that I looked out the slide above is indicative…
