American Dream – Bright Young Things – Big Tree Dream – 05-04-2026

Here is last night’s dream. It is unusual in that it is set in the USA and has a West coast techie vibe.

The dream opens in an atrium like setting of a high technology building. People are gathering together including me. It is in the USA, West Coast, Bay Area. If feels Berkeley-Stanford university cutting edge technology. It is unclear if it is university or a big tech “campus”.  I have been foisted upon a team from above. The people around me are all bright young things, (BYTs) twenties and thirties of age. They are brash cocksure and ambitious. They are mostly American but there are a spattering of Asians and Europeans. I am being tolerated because of orders from above which are being humoured by the BYTs. They do not understand why a UK fossil has been foisted upon them. They have been told to listen to me. Most are not happy.

A tall man with a faint Germanic accent is by my side. He is by way of a team leader and less discombobulated by me being there. He tells me that we are going to one of their local haunts for drinks and games like pool and ten pin. They know us well and the team has a regular block booking.

We leave the atrium in daylight, late afternoon. I will need some cash for the gathering. I look down into my wallet and can see that I have an American green card which is brand spanking new. There is also a Wells Fargo bank card. I am going to go to a cash point and will meet them later. The feeling from the BYTs is that I have nothing to offer them, they already know it all.

In a quasi-suburban setting there has been a mix up and a woman has by accident used and picked up my bank card. I chase her along the street asking her to stop in my usual accent and using polite words. Surprised she does stop. I catch up and explain that she has picked up my bank card and cash. She is American and well to do, oozing expensive clothes and with a toy dog. She is about my age. I ask her to show me the contents of her bag. There is my bank card and to one side $200 in US currency. This is next to her currency. I take my card and money and give her back her large wad of cash. She is a bit flustered. The amount of $200 dollars is very specific. I will use it in the bar later with the BYTs. She likes the fact that I have spoken to her in a British accent. She wants to know why I am there. I say that I am with a  bunch of young techie BYTs for today. I am not quite sure why.

The dream changes to the inside of an American luxury wooden home. It is constructed such that the internal ceiling is very tall. There is lot of headroom, tens of meters. Pointing up into the vertex of the eaves is a large tree trunk. There are no branches or foliage, just trunk. The diameter is about 80cm. The tree has been allowed to grow inside the house. I take a pruning saw on the end of long pole and cut a diagonal cut across the tree such that the cut slopes downwards and is not horizontal. It is about 60% through.

Someone comes in and asks if it is wise not to cut horizontally. I say that the tree can sit into the cut. The tree starts to move. It begins to fall in ultra slow motion. I go outside to see if anyone can help me support the tree. Marcus the man who helped us in the garden, is there on a mower. He says he will be in in a tick. I go inside in time to watch the tree falling scraping the internal timbers of the roof, breaking through an internal stud wall, smashing a glass door and window and coming to rest on a chest height window sill with the trunk sticking out of the window.

I think to myself that they should have thought things through better before allowing the tree to grow so big inside the house.

The dream ends.
