In the Jason Bourne series of films the main protagonist leaves the CIA enhanced kill programme and is pursued on and off by his erstwhile employers. To them he is always Jason Bourne and they cannot let go of this identity. Captain Webb has no intention of coming in from the cold as a returning prodigal. He tries his best to renounce his assassin ways. Since he has been gone many shenanigans continue at the CIA which are covert from the normal governmental authorities. There are iffy “black programmes”. It is all very dodgy, suspect, political and Webb is seen as a threat. The corrupt CIA members cannot believe that Webb does not want to return home for the metaphorical fatted calf.
No gang or group from which there are prodigals or renunciates can ever accept that someone might do that. That is taboo and unthinkable. Garry Glitter can’t believe those that joined his gang ratted on him. The prodigal is never forgiven. The gang, the us, is tantamount.
The prodigal becomes the subject of gossip and hearsay. Because they are not there they cannot defend themselves and people are free to invent and propagate whatever they wish. There will be no contradiction.
Consequently Lauren Cooper’s reputation precedes her.

People feel free to disrespect the house of Cooper and intimate that her dad is pikey.
Captain Webb has no idea what has transpired since he left all those decades ago. The evidence suggests that all is not well in the state of Denmark, forsooth.
Webb is on the run, off the grid in so far as he can be. He wants to live but is haunted by the past and the narratives thereof which occasionally find him.
The tendrils are far-reaching. The reach of the CIA is global; his former employers are quite literally everywhere…
At every turn there is hazard for David Webb…
They want him gone, finished, caput…
There is no rest for Webb it seems.
They simply will not let go….
