Jobs for the over 60s

Still kicking around the idea of a house move…

So I had a look at “advice” for those seeking employment in my age range. There are lot of things said about how it is illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age. But I doubt that this is monitored or enforced. The Job Centre Plus people have written a white paper on it…so everything must be dandy and sorted….

A brief look shows that there is a shortage of physics teachers in the UK. I am not qualified to teach so I would have to go to a posh private school. I could not hack a full time teaching post.

The government says it does not discriminate… I could work for the MoD..

Have a look at the advice below. Is there anything which strikes you about the tone?

Maybe I should apply for the Falklands job…

There is no way around the lack of recent work experience nor the fact that I do not have any referees able to supply a reference for me which is less than two decades old.

I looked into editing a while back but that looks to be a closed shop and likely to be phased out by AI.

The most sensible suggestion remains private science tutoring. This means that we could slightly push up the price range of house available in the UK. Top whack seems to be 200 quid an hour.

Back in Farnham I had nice chats with the OAPs working the tills in Waitrose. I could probably do that job too…I could probably work as a barman-psychotherapist one or two nights a week.

I suspect that I need someone to pat me reassuringly on the head and go “there, there, pops…”

“Here are your pipe and slippers…How is your catheter?”

Far out….

Job satisfaction is important. Think about what you enjoyed most about your last job, as well as what you enjoy doing in your leisure time. Here are some ideas:

Gardening

If you enjoy gardening, you could apply for jobs at the local garden centre. There may also be gardening work available at nearby parks, hospitals, or stately homes.

Floristry

Floristry is an enjoyable career path for anyone who likes flower arranging. If you don’t have any experience, contact a few local florists to offer your time as a volunteer.

Customer Service

If you enjoy talking to people, consider applying for customer-facing retail roles or a job in a call centre. Whether you apply for a job in the local supermarket or look for a home-based role in telesales, positions in customer services will make good use of your communication skills.

Care Work

Whether you’ve raised a family, worked in a childcare setting, or taken care of an elderly relative, having experience of looking after others could make you a good candidate for care work.

Driving

Driving instructor jobs are a good choice for experienced drivers who enjoy driving. Apart from being a good driver, you’ll need to be patient, friendly, and able to give clear instructions. No qualifications are required, but you’ll need to pass the Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) standards check.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week; however the Ministry of Defence offers a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance for employees.
